One of my more popular images over the last couple of years has been my American Flag in Water Drops. So, I thought I'd share with everyone how I made this image. It's actually quite easy!
Here's what you'll need:
1. A clean pane of glass
2: Rain-X
3. A spray bottle of water
4. A subject (I used a small American flag)
Once you have your pane of glass treated with the Rain-X, spray it with your water. For larger beads, shoot your water closer to the glass. Here, I decided the beads were too small, so I sprayed it down again. Also, I noticed that my refraction wasn't right. The flag was facing the wrong way. Easy enough to fix in Photoshop, but why not get it right in camera if possible?
Here I have the flag how I wanted and am ready to shoot. You might have to switch to manual focus, as the auto focus may adjust right through the glass and onto the flag underneath. Click the next button to see a few of the final images from this shoot!
On this one, a lot of the beads were of a uniform size. That's okay, but I prefer to have a bit of a mix.
Took this one in a little different direction. I angled the camera a little more to fade them and give the appearance of larger beads on the left getting smaller to the right.
This is my favorite one from this shoot. Quite a few larger beads with a bunch of smaller ones filling in the space in between.
And finally, I decided to move the flag in closer so I could focus just on the stars. Throughout the shoot, I was constantly moving the flag, and/or camera around to get different looks. Remember, there is no absolute right or wrong way. Just have fun!
